Abstract: |
The watching brief identified that the upper sequence was broadly comparable throughout the site, with fairly deep deposits of modern demolition material and made ground over later post-medieval soil horizons. In the western part of the site these soil layers sealed natural silty sand, and to the north truncated and overlay the lower section of a substantial east-west ditch that contained no finds. This latter feature was some 2m wide and may well have represented an earlier field boundary. However, to the east and closer to the River Wandle the natural ground surface fell by up to 0.8m. In the lower-lying eastern part of the site probable alluvial deposits, mainly silts but also some gravel, overlay natural clay. The finds made during the watching brief were of later post-medieval date, and consisted of two pottery sherds, one of Pearlware and the other of post-medieval redware pottery, both dating to c.1800-1900.
