Abstract:
The watching brief revealed evidence for earlier structures of post-medieval date along Swindon Road, chiefly, the possible existence of an earlier wall foundation beneath the c.1849 boundary wall of St. Paul's College. A fragment of stone wall to the west of Dunalley Street may have belonged to the building shown on a map of 1809. Insubstantial wall foundations found beneath the road, 6 to 7m from the current buildings on the south side of Swindon Road may have represent the roadside boundaries of former house front plots. Because Swindon Road (formerly Back Road: Jameson 1809) marks the line of the medieval back lane to the High Street properties, these wall foundations may have also represented the alignment of the original medieval boundary. Victorian cellars and a possible brick-lined well were located to the west of Brunswick Street on the north side of Swindon Road. [Au(adp)]
