Abstract: |
An archaeological excavation was undertaken across the site of the former Deptford East and West power stations in advance of the comprehensive redevelopment of the site. The fieldwork included excavation of the two areas identified during an earlier archaeological evaluation on the site and further evaluation in areas where investigation had not previously been possible. The excavations revealed remains of the post-medieval almshouses and structural remains of the dockyard, founded by the East India Company in the early 17th century. A pottery manufacturing site was to have occupied part of the site during the 18th century. No structural remains of this pottery were found although a significant quantity of dumped pottery wasters and associated kiln waste, probably associated with the pottery, was retrieved. [AIP] |
