Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed development. The location of the site, on the terrace gravels and the proximity to the River suggested a high potential of finding prehistoric remains. The possibility of Roman remains was slight, although with little archaeological monitoring in the area and Roman finds further to the north, it was not impossible. The highest potential for remains was from the medieval period. The site was close to a long-standing boundary, which may contain evidence of buildings, backyard activity, or medieval agricultural practices. From the 16th century onwards a more accurate location of the site was possible which indicated a high potential of encountering archaeology evidence of 17th and 18th century gardening practices associated with Grove Lodge. Museum extensions in 1975 meant a large portion of the courtyard development area had been truncated to a depth of more than 3 metres below the ground level, this truncation considerably reduced the potential for archaeology surviving within the site.
