Abstract: |
The assessment established that settlement on the site was expected to have begun with the Roman occupation of the City, resuming during the medieval period. All above-ground structures may well have been destroyed during the sieges of the 1640's, whilst subsequent rebuilding may have removed earlier foundations, depending on the extent of cellarage. The removal of the 17th-19th century buildings during the period 1942 to 1964 appeared not to have been accompanied by archaeological investigations, but the replacement of buildings appeared to be typically unbasemented, with the exception of those nearest to Eastgate.[Au(abr)] |
