Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the demolition of the existing houses across the site. This exercise was found to be unsatisfactory due to the rubble from the massive foundations of the demolished 18th/19th century mansion. Little could be the observed due to the loose rubble infill so it was decided to open first one trench, then a second, using the plans of the mansion to position them. Further observation of the foundation trenches failed to reveal evidence for activity earlier than the house. It was concluded that the extensive cellars were sunk deeply into the natural clay, and, had deposits pre-dating the mansion existed originally, these would have been destroyed when the house was built.
