Abstract: |
Planning permission had been granted for the redevelopment of a large-scale site in the centre of Lewisham. The proposed development was for a multi-storey building complex, with a single-storey basement along the Lewisham High Street frontage. Details as to the foundation design were unknown at present, but the complex was to include lift shafts, a vehicle inspection pit, new services and access areas, and large areas of hardstanding. Although a basement was proposed along the High Street, this area had already been deeply truncated and any potential archaeological deposits removed. In the eastern area of the site, however, substantial deposits of 'made ground' were present, which may have represented buried archaeological horizons. Any building activity on this area of the site may, therefore, have a negative impact on archaeological deposits. [Au(abr)] |
