Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken on land proposed for an extension to Westbury Chalk Pit. This was subdivided into Areas A and B, (the existant chalk pit), and the remains of the study area of 1km beyond. The assessment showed the archaeological potential of the area to be high, with evidence of considerable prehistoric, Roman and Saxon activity. The area of the current quarry produced a number of prehistoric finds, and contained the possible remains of round barrows. Area A seemed to have limited archaeological potential while Area B contained the remains of at least two sites, and possibly more. [Au(abr)] |
