Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the site of a 19th century park was undertaken in advance of proposals which were intended to enhance and protect the historic park landscape. A bandstand, a former drinking fountain and a 'Ropewalk' within the park were recorded on the SMR. Earlier activity was indicated by chance finds of a Bronze Age palstave and a Roman coin. A church which may have lain on the site of a medieval church lay at the north-eastern corner of the survey area, and the site of a moated rectory was indicated by documentary evidence. The church may have represented a focus for a medieval settlement at Handsworth. Eight zones of differing potential archaeological survival within the study area were identified. Zones 1, 2 and 5 had been heavily disturbed by modern construction and landscaping, and were considered unlikely to contain survivng archaeological deposits. Zones 3 and 7 may have been slightly disturbed by initial landscaping, and contained no documented sites. It was recommended that works within these zones should be monitored. Zones 4, 6 and 8 could potentially contain evidence relating to medieval settlement at Handsworth. Trial trenching of these areas was recommended. It was noted that all of the zones contained features which bore witness to the historical development of Handsworth Park. [AIP]
