Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken prior to proposed sand and gravel extraction. The report concluded that the potential for unrecorded archaeological remains was high and was likely to include Mesolithic, Neolithic and Early Bronze Age lithic material and late prehistoric/Roman settlement and/or field systems. Occupation areas would have been most probable on the higher, drier grounds of the sandy ridge and outcropping Older River Gravel's and First Terrace deposits around the margins of the former wetlands. The silt and clay alluvium that covered the most of the site offered good potential for the preservation of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental remains and might have concealed former land surfaces and provide the potential for environmental reconstruction and radiometric dating. The interface between these sediments and the areas of higher ground were considered to be of particular interest. [Au(adp)] |
