Abstract: |
Evaluation of land adjacent to the Cowley and Brown County Primary School comprised excavation of three trenches. There were no datable features in Trench 1 but a closely dated group of rubbish pits containing 12th-13th century pottery were found in Trenches 2 and 3. Environmental assessment confirmed that material in the pits was derived from household waste and that habitation was close by. Evidence of cereal and pulse cultivation, together with shell fish, animal, bird and fish bones demonstrated the varied diet enjoyed by the medieval community. Preliminary soils analysis showed that the area was probably tidal mud flats in the pre-medieval period. [Au] |
