Abstract: |
The site was not located within an Area of Archaeological Importance according to the London Borough of Enfield Local Plan. The site consisted of a number of buildings set in landscape gardens constructed at intervals beginning in the late 18th century and continuing into the late 20th century. The buildings varied in style and size, it was unknown if any of the buildings contained basements. The site contained a number of Listed Buildings, parks and gardens, statues and other structures such as the pergola, although there were no SAMs within the site boundary. There were also a number of references for the surrounding area relating to archaeological finds discovered in a 1km radius of the site. The site was gradually developed from the late 18th century onwards, after the enclosure of Enfield Chase; prior to this the site had been part of The Chase for approximately 700 years. Little in the way of buried archaeology was thought to exist upon the site based on the research conducted. The exception to this was the potential survival of the foundations of demolished wings previously attached to the main Trench Park house. Many features of the site were Listed and these would need to be taken into consideration, particularly concerning the settling of the Listed buildings/structures. Furthermore there was evidence to suggest that the original landscaping was designed by the renowned landscape designer Humphry Repton, although there was not a great deal of evidence to identify the extent of his contribution. It was therefore recommended that a detailed survey of the landscape be conducted to establish how much work, if any, could be attributed to Humphry Repton, and assess further the impact of the proposed scheme on the grounds and parks.
