Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of a trench which ran across the site of the gatehouse of a Cistercian monastery. Excavations to the north-west of the gatehouse had recorded several phases of stone structures. Deposits had been interpreted as the result of post-Dissolution demolition and post-medieval redevelopment. During the watching brief, tipped deposits similar to those encountered earlier were noted. A probable robber trench, a limestone wall and a shallow pit containing lime mortar were also revealed. Thirty sherds of medieval pottery and tile were recovered, but no evidence of medieval structures was observed. [AIP] |
