Abstract:
The most significant results of the monitoring project were the identification of a charnel soil to within 0.20m of present ground level, and the absence of human remains towards the eastern end of the trench. The high level at which the articulated skeletons were found indicated significant truncation of the burial ground. The recovery of post-1770 pottery from the charnel soils within pits C and D suggested the use of the area as a burial ground into the late 18th or early 19th century. Pits A and B fell within what was once an open area to the rear of the Treasurer's House, known to have occupied the site since the 13th century until the early 19th century. The recovery of animal bone from these pits was consistent with discarded domestic waste, whilst the absence of human bone, suggested that this part of the Close had never formed part of the burial ground.[Au(abr)]
