Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a site at the Castle proposed for residential development discovered that there was a high potential for Roman, Norman and medieval remains on the site. The development site lay within the Roman salient constructed during the first century AD; in the Norman period the Roman salient was developed into a castle complex, and in the medieval period the castle continued to function as a fortress and also as a royal residence. Remains from these periods had been found in the past and it was considered likely that others awaited discovery. [AIP] |
