Abstract:
Desk-based assessment identified that the site of the former Orgreave Colliery and Coking works proposed for development as an opencast coal mine was located in an area in which records of prehistoric and Roman activity were sparse. Centres of Saxon and medieval settlement were documented in the area and Orgreave Hall was constructed in the latter part of the 17th century, which may have represented the replacement of an earlier hall on the site. The opening of Orgreave Colliery in 1851 rapidly changed the character of the landscape from agricultural to industrial. The Hall and a small area of regenerated woodland however survived, although by 1994, vandalism and a fire had severely damaged the Hall. [AIP]
