Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay within Potterspury, a village where the presence of a medieval and post-medieval pottery industry had been well documented. The nearest known kilns to the proposal site lay c. 50m to the south. During the evaluation, significant quantities of medieval and post-medieval pottery were found, and the remains of a kiln which showed several phases of re-building were revealed. Features included a probable robbed-out kiln wall and two possible flues, whilst a large deposit of ash flecked with charcoal may have indicated the location of a stoking or raking-out pit. The possible site of another kiln was also observed. A linear feature, possibly a gully or construction trench, cut through deposits of kiln debris, and thus appeared to have been the latest feature within the excavation area. The dating of the kiln or kilns could not be established with any certainty, due to the superficial nature of the evaluation. It was concluded that the existence of other kilns and/or associated ancillary structures in the area remained a distinct possibility. The archaeological deposits had been discovered at a depth of 0.15m and would, therefore, be vulnerable to any change in land use of the area. [Au(adp)] |
