Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for residential development identified that a pair of Mesolithic axes had been found within 500m of the site. Numerous Mesolithic, Bronze Age and Roman sites and significant quantities of Neolithic material had been recorded within 2km, although few Iron Age artefacts and no Saxon remains had been found. The original farm of Tongham Manor, likely to have been of 14th century origin, had lain on the southern part of the proposal site until the early 20th century. It was concluded that the site had a good potential for Mesolithic and Roman evidence and a high potential for medieval and post-medieval remains, particularly as previous land use was likely to have had only a limited impact on any potential archaeological deposits. An evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
