Abstract: |
The proposed garage redevelopment lay in an area of archaeological interest on the site of a probable medieval corn mill and post-medieval corn and needle mill (Warwickshire SMR Ref No. WA 568). Observation of soil stripping and the excavation of foundation trenches in December 1994 revealed layers connected with the demolition and landscaping of the 19th century mill buildings between 1905 and 1938, and the course of the former mill race. No finds earlier in date than the 19th century were recovered, although there was considerable evidence of the mill's former function in the form of discarded needles. However, the foundation trenches for the new garage were only 1.2m deep and did not penetrate to the natural subsoil; the survival of earlier remains below was therefore considered very likely.[AIP] |
