Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on ground disturbance associated with drainage works around the Chantry Chapel of the Church of St. James. As part of a programme of remedial works, a French drain was to be installed around external walls of the Chantry Chapel, linked to a new soakaway situated to the south of the building. A member of staff from Albion Archaeology monitored the excavation of a continuous trench around the external walls of the Chantry Chapel. This extended from the south-eastern corner of the Chantry Chapel, where a connecting drain was dug, terminating in a soakaway. The trench around the 15th century Chantry Chapel revealed an offset wall footing and the remains of an associated buttress. The slight contrast in the alignment with the standing wall may have indicated that this was associated with an earlier chapel. As this footing merged into the Chancel wall, it was possible that the structure was associated with the rebuilding of the Chancel in the 14th century. The contrasting stonework of the buttress on the eastern side of the south porch and the southern wall of the Chantry Chapel indicated that these structures were not contemporary. The trenches also exposed an undifferentiated dark brown grave soil, which was at least 0.8m thick in the area south of the church. No burials or other archaeological features were identified beyond the church walls. Only isolated bone fragments were revealed during the excavation of the trenches and soakaway, these were collected for reburial. [Au(abr)]
