Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment and a resistivity survey of a proposed development site within the grounds of Wombwell Hall were undertaken. The Wombwell family had been mentioned in manorial records as early as 1137. The hall itself had become a fortified manor by the 15th century, consisting of a tower forming part of a complex of buildings placed around two courtyards. The hall had begun to decline in the 18th century, and was demolished in the mid-19th century. Excavations in 1982 had revealed that the foundations and footings of the tower range had been completely removed, whilst a trench adjacent to a surviving building uncovered a stone flagged area incorporating medieval stone window fragments and a possible water channel. Pottery supported documentary evidence that the site had been continuously occupied from the 12th to the 16th century. It was concluded that the proposal area was the location of a medieval site of regional importance. Geophysical anomalies were identified during the survey, but were not thought to have represented features associated with the early phase of occupation. [AIP] |
