Abstract:
Archaeological excavations in the north part of the Market Place at Ripon were completed. The excavations indicated the presence of archaeological remains over the majority of the area investigated. The earliest deposits included a north-south boundary ditch along the eastern edge of the Market Place, predating the earliest cobbled surface to the area. Two cobbled surfaces, together with make-up layers, were present dating from the medieval/early post-medieval period. The northern area of the Market Place appeared to have undergone a period of disuse, when wetland vegetation took hold and periodic domestic rubbish deposition took place. No remains of substantial buildings were identified during the excavations. An exceptional quality and quantity of archaeological deposits were encountered over the northern part of the site. These deposits were unexpected, not having been identified during the evaluation. Preservation of artefacts and ecofacts was excellent because of the anaerobic conditions present. Significant archaeological data was collected relating to ceramic, faunal and microfossil remains. The presence of cobbled surfaces meant that the majority of material was from stratigraphically secure contexts. The data had the potential to elucidate the majority of the research questions posed within the Project Design. This report comprised the post-excavation assessment report. [Au(abr)]
