Abstract: |
The assessment concerned the renewal of a 6km long pipeline identified 38 sites within 500 metres of the proposed route. The most significant noted archaeological features were the Scheduled Monuments of a cairn field and the Ring of Stones cairn. Evidence for human activity from the prehistoric to the post-medieval period was recorded along the proposed route. Burial sites and spot finds indicated prehistoric activity towards the west of the site, while Roman activity had been recorded along the central and eastern parts of the route. Dispersed medieval and post-medieval industrial and agricultural sites were located, but were thought to be too well-dispersed to be impacted by the scheme. Although the proposed route would not pass through archaeological sites, specifically the Roman Road, watching briefs were recommended on certain sections. [Au(abr)] |
