Abstract:
A series of watching briefs was undertaken during the ground-disturbing component of the development in this section of the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail. The path in this section followed the line of the ditch to the north of Hadrian's Wall, within the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and the Scheduled Monument of Hadrian's Wall and Vallum between the B6309 and the B6321, in Wall Miles 16, 17 and 18 (SM26043). The on-site works during April 2000 consisted of the monitoring of a trench through a low causeway (site 1) which crossed the Wall ditch and provided agricultural access from the B6318 to the fields to the north. The trench was excavated by mechanical digger and resulted in a bisection of the causeway, confirming that it was of 19th to 20th century date, although evidence was found of an earlier, narrower causeway. Further works involved the excavation of post holes for a ladder platform (Site 3) and two wicket gates (sites 3 and 4); these were all excavated by hand. The sub-surface excavations were under constant archaeological supervision although in the event the sites produced few archaeological finds. The general depth of the excavation trench and post holes did not exceed 0.8m. During February 2001, further works comprised the excavation of post holes prior to the installation of a wicket gate, stone waymarker and finger post (Sites 5-7), immediately to the north of B6318. No significant archaeological deposits were recorded during this work, although a piece of worked stone was recovered and removed to Rudchester Farm for safekeeping. [Au(abr)]
