Abstract:
The assessment was commissioned in order to assess the impact of a new redevelopment scheme on areas of probable archaeological survival within the land bounded by St Paul's Churchyard, Newgate Street and Warwick Lane, Paternoster Square. It was felt that this area was likely to contain important archaeological deposits as previous excavations in and around the area had revealed evidence for the main Roman road (running east-west across the square), a Roman cemetery and houses, and medieval pits, wells and a house. Four areas of archaeological potential had been first defined in a previous report, while a fifth area was outlined in this report. It was concluded that remains from the Roman period onwards were likely to survive in at least parts of all the Areas of Potential discussed, though it was unlikely that deposits would have survived to an equal depth across the entire extent of each area. Indications from test-pits and boreholes suggested patchy and localised survival, though of considerable depth in places. As the proposed development would involve the complete destruction of virtually all surviving archaeological deposits it was suggested a policy of preservation by record, rather than preservation in situ, given the fragmentation of the site, would be required.
