Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development which lay within the medieval town of Saffron Walden, and was believed to have been crossed by the 13th century Repel Ditches. Several features which were probably of post-medieval or modern date were revealed. Most of these were shallow and ill-defined, with the exception of a well-defined ditch which may have been a garden feature. The remainder consisted of two gullies, a pit and two modern post-holes. The area of the site appeared to have been terraced, possibly as part of garden landscaping in the 19th century. It was concluded that archaeological remains were unlikely to have survived.
