Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a sports hall within the grounds of Salisbury Cathedral School, which occupied the buildings and grounds of the medieval Bishop's Palace. An earlier geophysical survey had indicated the presence of paths close to the surface, and deeper ditches corresponding with the postulated lines of a medieval drainage ditch. During the evaluation, the latest phase of a water-bearing ditch was revealed, and deep deposits of garden soils beneath gravel paths were identified. Artefacts recovered included medieval and post-medieval pottery, possible medieval building material and post-medieval clay pipe and glass fragments. It was concluded that there was a high potential for well-preserved, waterlogged remains within the lower, potentially medieval, levels of the ditch. [AIP] |
