Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on a series of test-pits excavated and piled window samples undertaken as part of site investigation works. The soil investigations confirmed the presence of basements in some areas of the site, the floor levels of which varied considerably. In Window Sample B the floor slab was encountered at a level of 3.8m, a depth where considerable damage to underlying archaeological deposits was likely to have occurred. However, in Test-Pit 3, the floor level was encountered at 1.55m below present ground level and, providing there was only limited disturbance below the slab, then archaeological deposits could have survived substantially intact. On this basis it seemed reasonable to assume that at variable levels the presence of basements did not actually preclude the survival of underlying archaeology. In Test-Pit 11 the Anglo-Saxon/medieval topsoil was recorded, it's 1m thickness comparable with other recorded depths in the town. Where this layer was encountered, underlying archaeological deposits were likely to have survived intact. [Au(adp)] |
