Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a motorway service area. Documentary research indicated that a settlement at Tibshelf had been recorded in the Domesday Survey. Four sites had been recorded within 1km of the proposal area, consisting of a reference to a 14th century mill, a medieval coal pit, the site of a holy well and a Grade II Listed church in Tibshelf. Bronze Age features had recently been recorded in a field adjacent to the proposal site. Geophysical survey recorded a number of anomalies, initially interpreted as recent deposits of industrial waste, or agricultural features. Trial trenching revealed that some of the anomalies plotted were of geological origin, whilst others represented 19th and 20th century dumping activity. Fragments of 19th century brick, tile, slate and drain pipe were observed. No evidence of human activity positively dated to earlier than c. 1800 was identified. [AIP] |
