Abstract: |
Four trenches were excavated to further evalute geophysical anomalies identified in an earlier survey on land proposed for development. The anomalies were shown to be banks with minimal evidence for ditches on either side. These banks were made up of a mixture of subsoil, topsoil and turf. The presence of 19th century pottery in one of the banks implied a modern date although frequent worm and rabbit action was present throughout the site. Lack of disturbance or metalling between the banks seemed to discount the theory that these banks related to a lane or trackway. The presence of a slight rubble field boundary containing late 13th/14th century white gritty ware was noted running at a different orientation and was roughly consistent with the position of an anomaly noted in the geophysical survey.
