Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of development at the former site of Denton Hall, a manor house with a medieval core. The west wing of the house had been demolished in 1895, and a detached 15th century wing had been dismantled in the 1970s. The remainder had been destroyed by fire in the 1930s. In 1980, an excavation of the site of the 15th century wing had revealed remains of the building and an earlier cut feature, interpreted as a moat. The excavation had been abandoned before this interpretation could be confirmed, owing to a spillage of diesel fuel. The 1998 evaluation located the remains of Denton Hall as it had stood until the 19th century, but did not reveal the remains of any earlier medieval structures. Fragments of clay pipe and 18th-20th century pottery were recovered. The moat feature was identified to the north and west of the hall, but not to the east or south. It was considered likely that the 'moat' had not formed a complete circuit around Denton Hall, but had been a decorative or symbolic feature, present only on the more public side of the building. It was concluded that the site contained surviving elements of the medieval and post-medieval hall, as well as a medieval cut feature which could be considered to fall into the category of a moat, although from the information provided by the evaluation, it appeared to have been unusual in form. The features identified during the evaluation were considered to have been of local importance, although it was noted that the site had the potential to contain more significant archaeological remains which could be of regional significance. A watching brief was later carried out, during machine stripping of the site. [Au(adp)] |
