Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out at Merton Abbey Mills during the excavation of test pits for a ground contamination survey. The site was located inside the precinct of the former Augustinian priory of St Mary, founded in 1114. The Abbey Mills complex of buildings themselves are of more recent historical interest, having been the former works of Liberty. Structural remains encountered in some of the test pits were probably medieval in date and confirmed that the priory buildings were not only confined to the area adjacent to the church but were scattered across the precinct.
