Abstract:
The archaeological evaluation located part of the Georgian garden, demonstrated how it had been re-landscaped and terraced in the Victorian period and also delineated the layout of the most recent garden. An 1884 OS map showed a terraced garden divided into two segments by a retaining wall with flowerbeds lining it on both sides. The lower garden had been accessed by a path branching off at right angles from a path running parallel to the south-western boundary wall. All of these features were identified during the evaluation, although the discovery of several phases of path metalling and flowerbed deposition suggested that the garden had been resurfaced and replanted on more than one occasion. The use of tarmac suggests it might not have been re-landscaped sometime during the 20th century. The later 19th century garden in turn sealed the remains of the Georgian garden, which comprised a sloping, unterraced central expanse of rubble and clay with flowerbeds on either side. [Au(abr)]
