The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:		 Trial pits and boreholes excavated on the site of a former gasworks in order to assess any soil contamination were monitored. Archaeological features in the form of pits and burials were identified, finds including pottery dated the features to the 10th-12th centuries, the Late Saxon/early medieval periods. The presence of the church of St. Edmunds was implied by the discovery of the burials, it was hoped that structural remains lay elsewhere on the site in areas not investigated. The gasworks destroyed remarkably little of the earlier remains, and the structures associated with the Retort House were themselves considered of archaeological interest. [AIP]
