Abstract: |
The watching brief produced evidence for well-preserved archaeological remains dating mainly from the post-medieval period. The results indicated that the building was subdivided in the late 17th century, on the ground floor at least, by a through passage with a cobbled surface. It was possible that the building had its origins as a medieval house with a two room cross-passage plan. The front wall of the present building was a later brick addition, and this wall has slightly encroached into the former medieval street area. The earlier frontage of No. 48 and that of Gray's Almshouses are therefore likely to represent the original medieval street frontages on the southern side of East Street. [Au(adp)] |
