Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken on the site which was originally the stables for Hampton Court Palace. A record was made of archaeological strata and features revealed by the contractor's excavations for a new drainage system. The earliest strata consisted of alluvial silts and clays which had been deposited by the River Thames. Near the top of the alluvium in one part of the site was a layer of fragmentary Tudor brick partly covered by a layer of broken tiles. Layers of material included building debris which had been dumped on top of the alluvium, presumably to prevent overbank flooding from the Thames. The dump layers were cut by the corner of a building which appeared on an Ordnance Survey map of 1863. It was made of brick probably dating to the late 18th/early 19th century. The remains of a brick wall, probably of 19th century date, were also found. [Au(adp)] |
