Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed new car park and burial ground extension on land adjoining the churchyard of St. James' Church. On the western end of the site there was evidence for made ground, possibly to grade the ground level up to that of the churchyard. The eastern end revealed a double ditch on the line of the former eastern boundary of 'Chapel Yard' which in the 19th century included the current churchyard and land to the south. Another linear feature some 50m from Mill Lane may have been another boundary ditch. The south corner of a large feature at the eastern end may have been associated with the double ditched boundary, which curved north-eastward just north of the evaluation trench. No evidence was identified that suggested the development area had been used as a burial ground. [Au(adp)] |
