Abstract: |
The assessment suggested the possible presence of a well-dispersed cemetery along the Roman road that followed the general alignment of the modern High Holborn/Oxford Street, and any evidence of the precise line of the road or associated roadside activity. Features and soil profiles relating to land use or occupation in the area during the medieval and post-medieval periods would have been of considerable significance including the developing urbanisation of High Holborn and Chancery Lane, which were principal medieval thoroughfares. Cartographic evidence had suggested that the site have been developed since at least the mid 16th century. It was thought that some areas of archaeological stratigraphy and cut features may have survived between and under the current basements. [Au(abr)] |
