Abstract: |
This evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed residential development. A previous desk based assessment identified the location of a moat within the study area and the trial trenches were placed to locate it. The excavation revealed the moat ditch survived to a depth of 1.22m and upcast material associated with an internal platform or bank was observed. Medieval pottery was found in the upcast soil, while only post-medieval pottery was located actually in the ditch. This may have implied that the ditch was cleaned out and maintained throughout the medieval period. Later use of the moat was indicated by a 18th century recut. Environmental material suggested wet and dry periods during the moat's use. The moat platform appeared to have been used as an orchard later into the post-medieval period. [Au(adp)] |
