Abstract: |
The site lay immediately to the north of the Balkerne Gate, and was located within insulae 17a and 17b of the Roman town. Excavations for a number of pipe trenches revealed Roman wall lines, floors, and gravel surfaces. The excavation of a lift shaft encountered a further Roman gravel surface and a wall foundation. Finds were plentiful and included a pottery assemblage that showed the potential of the site to yield stratified deposits in the future. The site was located precisely as parts of Buildings 208 and 209 in the numbered series of Colchester buildings. [Au(adp)] |
