Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development and associated flood compensation scheme identified that the site lay in a raised gravel 'island' above the alluvium of the surrounding floodplain. Geotechnical investigation had demonstrated the presence of an early river bank, representing the previous limit of a watercourse to the west of the site, on a line c. 55m in from the site's edge. Alluvium was recorded in this area, together with layers of organic material and peat. Documentary research showed that the site lay within an area of very high archaeological potential. Evaluation and excavation on the meadow known as Church Lammas, immediately to the west of the site, recorded a nationally important Upper Palaeolithic camp, a Late Bronze Age ritual enclosure, and field boundaries dating from the prehistoric and Roman periods. Evaluation immediately to the south-east of the application site also provided evidence that the focus of the Staines settlement in the mid to late Saxon period had been here on 'Church Island', rather than on 'Town Island' as the Roman and medieval settlements were. It was recommended that a field evaluation should be carried out within the eastern part of the site, and in the area to be affected by the flood compensation scheme. Houses on the western part of the site were to have bored pile foundations, which would have a minimal impact on any archaeological deposits present. It was therefore not considered appropriate for an evaluation to be carried out here. [Au(adp)]
