Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation, consisting of the excavation of seven trial trenches was undertaken that revealed the top of the natural alluvial silt and clays were overlain by buildings and surfaces relating to the cottages along the western side of the site, and to the shipyard elsewhere in the site. The cottages and shipyards dated from the early 18th century into the early 19th century, and the surfaces and buildings were well preserved as they were overlain by up to 1.5m of dumped clay. The clay had been brought onto the site in the middle of the 19th century to raise the ground level for the new, railway depot. The clay dumping was not predicted by the desktop assessment and meant that, rather than the railway use having damaged and destroyed the earlier remains on the site, it had in fact covered them with a protective layer.
