Abstract: |
An archaeological and built heritage study of the area was undertaken. The development site included the Castle Car Park, land between Piccadilly and the River Foss northwest of Ryedale House, and the Reynard's Site on the east side of Piccadilly. The study identified significant archaeological deposits preserved in all three areas. In the Castle Car Park, pockets of stratified deposits of Roman to post-medieval date were preserved between areas which had been heavily truncated by modern foundations. The Piccadilly and Reynard's sites both contained deep (over 7 metres), stratified and well preserved waterlogged organic archaeological deposits, of high archaeological value dating again from Roman times to the post-medieval period.
