Abstract:
Assessment of the archaeological implications of proposals for an opencast site, located within an area formerly part of a Medieval Grange of Dale Abbey, noted that during the digging of a drain in 1903 on the west side of Stanley Grange farm an undated single inhumation in a wooden coffin was unearthed, and that excavations in the late 1960's had revealed remains relating to the 18th century Baldock Mill, believed also to have been the site of a medieval mill. The standing buildings of Stanley Grange Farm were inspected and found to be mostly of 18th and 19th century construction, although the farmhouse may have made use of an earlier structure. A waste tip from early 20th century mining, hollows representing relict stream courses and meanders, an area of early 19th century ridge and furrow and features associated with Baldock Mill were identified during a walk-over survey of the proposal area.
