Abstract: |
The evaluation was carried out on two areas of land which adjoined Sands Lane at Mirfield. The evaluation was divided into two distinct phases of investigation. Phase1 comprised a geophysical magnetometer survey over the whole of the proposed development area, this highlighted a number of potential anomalies considered to represent buried land surfaces. Phase 2 involved the investigation of the amolalies through a limited programme of trial excavation, comprising four trenches. The trenches were excavated to a maximum depth of 2.60 metres below present ground level. No significant archaeological features or palaeoenvironmental deposits were found to be present, although a former land surface could be inferred from one of the trenches where a truncated oak stump was encountered, apparently in situ.
