Abstract:
An evaluation was conducted in advance of a proposed development. Two trenches were excavated primarily to identify the extent and nature of any archaeological remains that survived of the late 19th century Linthorpe pottery industry and earlier Sun Brickworks. Remains of the pottery industry were recorded, this included brick walls, floors, part of a probable glazing kiln, a complex structure possibly associated with another stage in the pottery production process and other structures. Many of these features had been impacted upon by later, 20th century activity. A clay pit quarry was recorded which contained backfill with 19th and early 20th century general domestic refuse. Linthorpe pottery was also in the backfill. Further excavation and recording was recommended. [Au(adp)]
