Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation of the site of a proposed amenity lake comprised the machine-excavation of four trenches. The evaluation revealed a sequence of well-defined, but shallow peat deposits on the valley floor, which were assessed for palaeoenvironmental information. Pollen evidence suggested a date of c.7000BP for the earlier deposits. There were no subsoil archaeological features present of settlement type, and only one artefact earlier than the post-medieval period; a worked flint flake. It was considered unlikely that evidence for occupation existed on the site, supported by its position in a low lying and waterlogged environment. The effect of the development was likely to be limited in extent, as the peat deposits were extensive and would survive outside the immediate vicinity of the proposed lake. [Au(abr)] |
