Abstract: |
Four archaeological test pits, were excavated to determine the extent of survival beneath the present buildings and the passageway of St. Alban's Court. The test pit in 90-91 Wood Street revealed extensive disturbance by 19th and 20th century construction. It was considered that only the bases of isolated deep cut features may survive in this part of the site. A narrow strip of truncated archaeological deposits was recorded in St. Alban's Court, beneath a 19th century sewer. These deposits appeared to date from the Roman and medieval or post-medieval periods. The testpits in 100 Wood Street revealed traces of Roman material, truncated by large medieval pits. A fragment of medieval chalk foundation was also recorded. The archaeological deposits exposed in these testpits were truncated by modern foundations, the current basement slab and a modern drain run. It was considered that similar pockets of archaeology may have survived across the site in those areas not disturbed by Victorian and later construction. [Au] |
