Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site, part of which may have overlain the remains of the 16th century Langtoft Hall. Possible features of a 17th or 18th century formal garden had been revealed by aerial photographs, and geophysical survey had shown that one arm of a moat extended onto the site. During the evaluation, part of the moat, part of a dovecote and two possible drains were located. Post holes, demolition rubble and part of a probable medieval building were recorded within the area enclosed by the moat. A wall foundation was found at the probable site of Langtoft Hall. Finds included animal bone, metal objects and late Saxon to post-medieval pottery. It was concluded that significant archaeological deposits dating from the 10th to the 18th century were present.
