Abstract:
Seven trial trenches were excavated as an evaluation following proposals to redevelop the site as houses, flats, gardens and a car park. Two trenches excavated adjacent to Wilson Street contained structural remains of cellars of 18th and 19th century date. Four trenches opened in the area of the known 19th century burial ground all contained evidence of either grave-cuts or human remains. The precise limits of the cemetery were not clearly defined, although the archaeological evidence, taken in conjunction with map-based evidence, placed the western boundary a few metres beyond the confines of the derelict standing building located in the south-eastern corner of the site. The remaining trench contained part of the rear wall of one of the slums backing onto the burial ground. There were no floors or cellars associated with the wall. This evidence, and the dimensions of the wall, appeared to confirm that the dwellings located on this part of the site were indeed inferior in quality to those formerly lining Wilson Street.
